Castle Repairs

Due to structural problems the large Castle in the centre of the capital city is slowly beginning to crumble away.

This would normally have not occurred for at least a few dozen years, however recent heavy rains have started to weaken the support beams holding up the roof and walls.

In order to attempt to solve this problem the Prince has been looking to recruit an Architect from across the known sea who will work to replace the support beams and much of the already
damaged area around the castle.

Of course bringing someone from across the sea isn't cheap, nor are the many supplies needed to fix the problems. In order to assist in getting the repairs started straight away the Prince would like to stockpile a large amount of resources and has received various offers for the materials, as well as boat hire.

Now, the architect himself has requested a salary wage of 74,000 ¢τ a Month, while it will also cost 20,000 ¢τ to hire the Boat to
bring him across to our own country, not to mention the same cost
to return him later after an approximate three months.

The Prince also wishes to stockpile 70,000 Wood; 50,000 Stones; 10,000 Marble and 40,000 Tools towards the repairs.

Given the following costs:-
Wood: 23.65 ¢τ per Fathom
Stones: 21.85 ¢τ a Brick
Marble: 840 ¢τ per Block
Tools: 14.85 per Quality Tool

Plus a discount of 5% on each product offered by the suppliers towards repairing the castle ...

Question: How much would it cost in total to repair the castle,
using all factors involved above?

If you believe the answer is "234,850 ¢τ" for example,
then your Subject Title should state this.'

Deadline for solutions is:
Friday, September 26th 2008

Messages received later then the specified deadline will not be counted when selecting the three random winners.

Three winners will be selected at random after this time and will be posted in Edition Twenty-One of the Regnum Journal.

Solution of last edition

So did you manage to work out the answer?

In order to work out what the answer actually is we need to understand how we are to come to that answer.

Do you see any pattern in the numbers looking horizontally, and vertically? They all add up to 25.

Therefore in the middle the number must add both 11 and 13; as well as 14 and 10 to 25 making only one possible answer:- The number One.

So for the prizes?
Congratulations to...

Here in the Regnum Journal we are always looking for suggestions or submissions for Word Puzzles, Riddles, and even Spot-The-Difference images as long as they are of a medieval theme.
Remember space shuttles and laser rifles did not exist in the Middle Ages.

If you are willing to contribute then please send submissions via Pigeon to the Journal with the subject Puzzle Suggestion.
Be sure to include the question and solution in the IGM.

Please try to ensure correct spelling on your contributions.
Puzzles which clearly show no effort to check for such mistakes will not be published.
