In the Middle Ages, deer was a primary source of food. So much so, in fact, that most meat gained by hunting was referred to as 'venison', and what we think of as 'venison' today was actually referred to as 'venison of deer'.

Hunting was both of entertainment value and food, and eventually became a sport for noblemen only. At that point, peasants were forbidden to hunt on restricted land. The penalty for a peasant caught violating this law was death or long imprisonment.

Hunting was a dangerous sport.
Death and injury were the normality, and many noblemen lost their lives in pursuit of the kill. Whereas today hunting accidents are the rarity, in those times it was almost expected.

In the days where a bow and arrow were the only weapon, poison was often used to gain an advantage over the animal.
Because of the difficulty of the hunt, as well as the beauty of the animal itself, the stag became an iconic figure in art, often depicted in the same esteem as the noblemen who hunted them.

In addition to the meat itself, the rest of the deer, as in most food animals of the time, was used in various ways. The skin was turned into leather, and the bones and antlers were carved into a variety of decorative as well as useful objects.

How does the Competition Work?

The product to be sent in for the competition is selected at random

The selected quality and retail price of the product to send is included in every announcement, however sometimes the product itself may be hidden with only a clue in the competition story.

Generally competitions are not suitable for the newer players or smaller cities due to the amount needed to have a fair chance in the standings. However they can sell the required product or something needed to produce them to those who are willing to pay enough to earn one of the above prizes since high yields are usually the target for these competitions.

On the last day of the competition at 23:59 the competition office is then closed until the next one is made available.

The winners are indicated in the competition listings.
